According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, many parents who lost their jobs as a result of the dismal economy are struggling to pay their child-support obligations.  One such parent is Itasca resident Brian Kalina. Mr. Kalina was divorced in November and ordered to pay $600.00 per month in child-support payments to his three children. A month later he found himself out of a job and struggling to meet his child-support obligation. Mr. Kalina went to court to try to lower his child-support payments until he could find a job. He has applied at dozens of locations, but was unsuccessful in attaining a position.

In Illinois, judges have the power to modify child-support payments if the parent making the payments is experiencing financial problems. However, Judge Raul Vega ultimately denied Mr. Kalina's request for a reduction in child-support payments. Mr. Kalinas was ordered to periodically appear before the court to tell the Judge about his job search efforts.

This is an unfortunate situation that happens all too often, especially amid the dismal economic conditions we currently face.
